should you cleanse your skin with a washcloth

Do you use a washcloth to cleanse your face?

I know a lot of you swear by it, and there are definitely some good reasons to use one, but, I can’t be bothered to. I mean, once in a while, I will. And I do love the results. But, everyday? I’m way too lazy for that.

The last time I used one was only a couple of days ago, and it inspired me to write this post about the pros and cons of washcloths. So, let’s get started:

Why Should You Use A Washcloth?

As I said, there are a couple of good reasons to cleanse and remove your makeup with a washcloth:

It Helps Cleanse Skin

A washcloth gives your cleanser a helping hand, so it can remove makeup and other impurities faster. That way, they don’t end up in your pores, causing breakouts.

Even if you double cleanse, sometimes there’s still a little residue left behind—especially if you’re dealing with waterproof makeup or mineral sunscreen. A washcloth ensures that everything is thoroughly removed, leaving your skin clean and prepped for the next step in your routine.

It Exfoliates Skin

A washcloth provides a gentle exfoliating action even sensitive skin can usually tolerate well. And, when skin is exfoliated, it looks smoother and brighter.

Unlike chemical exfoliants, which take time to dissolve dead skin cells, a washcloth works instantly to slough off dull skin. It’s also a good option for people who can’t tolerate stronger exfoliants like glycolic acid or retinoids.

It Enhances Product Absorption

When you remove that layer of dead skin cells and residue, your skincare products can penetrate better. That means your serums, moisturizers, and treatments won’t just sit on top of your skin—they’ll actually do their job more effectively

Why Should You NOT Use A Washcloth?

If you’re looking for an excuse not to use a washcloth, here are a couple:

Laziness

You need to wash yours after every use, and not everyone can be bothered with that (I so can’t, sorry!).

They’re A Playground For Bacteria

Bacteria thrive in moist environments, and a just-used or just-washed washcloth is the perfect place for them to live in and multiply. And, if that happens, you could get an infection or irritation. Scary, huh?

They Can Be Too Harsh

If you’re scrubbing too hard, using a rough-textured cloth, or washing your face too frequently with one, you risk over-exfoliating your skin. This can lead to irritation, redness, and even damage to your skin barrier, making your skin more prone to sensitivity, dryness, and breakouts.

They Can Spread Acne

If you’re acne-prone and not changing your washcloth daily, you might just be spreading bacteria around your face instead of getting rid of it. This can lead to more breakouts, clogged pores, and inflammation.

How Do You Use A Washcloth Safely?

Ok, now that I’ve scared you, let me reassure you.

It’s possible to use waschloths safely, without the risk of getting an infection or something. After all, so many folks are using one daily without problems.

How do they do it? Good habits, my friend:

  • Wash your washcloth after every use. I know it’s boring, but it’s essential for good hygiene.
  • Never use a washcloth when it’s wet or even just damp. That’s when bacteria develop, so give your washcloth time to dry before using it.
  • Never share your washcloth with someone else. If they have an infection or something, they’ll pass it on to you, and vice versa.
  • Use a clean, soft washcloth. Avoid rough textures that can damage your skin.
  • If you’re really worried about bacteria, boil the washcloth in hot water after every use. That’ll kill them all, trust me.

What’s The Best Type of Washcloth to Use?

Not all washcloths are created equal. If you’re going to use one, here’s what to look for:

  • Muslin cloths: Super gentle, great for daily use, and easy to clean.
  • Microfiber cloths: Absorb dirt and oil efficiently and feel softer on the skin.
  • Bamboo cloths: Naturally antibacterial and eco-friendly.
  • Organic cotton cloths: Soft and non-irritating, ideal for sensitive skin.

Avoid washcloths with a rough texture, as they can be too abrasive and cause micro-tears in the skin.

What If You Have Eczema?

A washcloth is great for everyone. Everyone bar those with eczema. The friction of the washcloth against the skin can cause a flare-up and make your eczema worse. Avoid!

If you have sensitive or eczema-prone skin but still want a little exfoliation, consider using a super-soft muslin cloth or simply relying on lactic acid instead.

The Bottom Line

Using a washcloth is a great way to cleanse and exfoliate your skin at the same time. But, because they could potentially be playgrounds for bacteria, they require more maintenance than some ladies (ahem) can put up with. It’s up to you to decide if the results are worth the hassle.

If you’re diligent about hygiene and love the added benefits of gentle exfoliation, a washcloth might just be your new skincare bestie. But if you’re lazy about laundry (like me) or prone to irritation, you might be better off sticking to just your hands and a good cleanser.

Whatever you choose, just make sure your skin is happy and healthy!
